How to Become an Ideal Leader

When you are at work, do you get frustrated because things don’t seem to be happening the way they’re supposed to be? You see people milling around but nothing gets accomplished. And in the daily hustle and bustle, do you feel that your goals remain just that – goals. Then maybe its time for you to stand up and do something about it.

Most people are content just to stand around listening for orders. And it isn’t unusual to adopt a follow-the-leader mentality. But maybe, somewhere inside of you, you feel the desire to make things happen – to be the head, not the tail. Then maybe leadership just suits you fine.

Some people believe that great leaders are made, not born. Yes, it may be true that some people are born with natural talents. However, without practice, without drive, without enthusiasm, and without experience, there can be no true development in leadership.

You must also remember that good leaders are continually working and studying to improve their natural skills. This takes a commitment to constantly improve in whatever endeavor a person chooses.

First of all, let’s define leadership. To be a leader, one must be able to influence others to accomplish a goal, or an objective. He contributes to the organization and cohesion of a group.

Contrary to what most people believe, leadership is not about power. It is not about harassing people or driving them using fear. It is about encouraging others towards the goal of the organization. It is putting everyone on the same page and helping them see the big picture of the organization. You must be a leader not a boss.

First of all, you have to get people to follow you. How is this accomplished?

People follow others when they see a clear sense of purpose. People will only follow you if they see that you know where you are going. Remember that bumper sticker? The one that says, don’t follow me, I’m lost too? The same holds true for leadership. If you yourself do not know where you’re headed to, chances are people will not follow you at all.

You yourself must know the vision of the organization. Having a clear sense of hierarchy, knowing who the bosses are, who to talk to, the organization’s goals and objectives, and how the organization works is the only way to show others you know what you are doing.

Being a leader is not about what you make others do. It’s about who you are, what you know, and what you do. You are a reflection of what you’re subordinates must be.

Studies have shown that one other bases of good leadership is the trust and confidence your subordinates have of you. If they trust you they will go through hell and high water for you and for the organization.

Trust and confidence is built on good relationships, trustworthiness, and high ethics.

The way you deal with your people, and the relationships you build will lay the foundation for the strength of your group. The stronger your relationship, the stronger their trust and confidence is in your capabilities.

Once you have their trust and confidence, you may now proceed to communicate the goals and objectives you are to undertake.

Communication is a very important key to good leadership. Without this you can not be a good leader. The knowledge and technical expertise you have must be clearly imparted to other people.

Also, you can not be a good leader and unless you have good judgment. You must be able to assess situations, weigh the pros and cons of any decision, and actively seek out a solution.

It is this judgment that your subordinates will come to rely upon. Therefore, good decision-making is vital to the success of your organization.

Leaders are not do-it-all heroes. You should not claim to know everything, and you should not rely upon your skills alone.

You should recognize and take advantage of the skills and talents your subordinates have. Only when you come to this realization will you be able to work as one cohesive unit.

Remember being a leader takes a good deal of work and time. It is not learned overnight. Remember, also, that it is not about just you. It is about you and the people around you.

So, do you have the drive and the desire to serve required of leaders? Do you have the desire to work cooperatively with other people? Then start now. Take your stand and be leader today.

The True Essence of Leadership

Some may think that as long as one in the position to give commands to other people, one is already exhibiting leadership. If you are one of the many people who look at leadership at such an extrinsic point of view, maybe it’s time for you to know that leadership isn’t just about leading and giving directions and commands to other people.

Leadership does not find its true essence until it becomes a source of inspiration and motivation for other people. Leaders should not only focus on their output and performance, but also on the influences and the impact that they bring to give to their subordinates. A good leader must be very careful and tactful in the way he manages his subordinates because they are people who are being looked up to and respected; they should preserve their image so as to remain a credible and reliable leader.

A Good Example

Peter Blake, a boat racer enthusiast from New Zealand, is an epitome of a person who possesses the good qualities and values that a good leader should have. Although Peter Blake isn’t very famous, his extraordinary characteristics were enough for him to be recognized.

A few years ago, Peter Blake’s boat got into trouble and he successfully overcame the boat trouble that he and his team was experiencing thanks to his strong will, positive attitude and determination.

For Peter Blake, leadership is not like being a driver who holds and controls the steering wheel alone. Leadership is something that involves team effort and acknowledges the need and importance of the participation and cooperation of all members of the team.

The Key to Successful Leadership

For a leader to effectively lead his men to success, he must make sure that all of them are well-equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform work successfully and to overcome tasks and difficulties which may arise in the future.

Appreciating and motivating the members of the team is also a great way to let the subordinates feel that they are not just mere subordinates. Whenever team effort is needed, it’s always best to set aside personal differences as well as conflicts and issues with one another because if not, it will surely hinder the performance and may lead to the downfall of the whole team.

In conclusion, the true essence of leadership cannot be attained by trying to do all the work alone. Great leadership comes when a leader knows his strengths and limitations and is open to the fact that he and his subordinates are interdependent with one another.

Leadership and communication are two principles closely intertwined with one another. In fact, it is even impossible to succeed as a leader without the development of your communication skills. The greater aspect of organizational success mainly lies in your ability to choose the rightful channels of communication. This also holds true to finding the perfect persons who can deliver your messages properly with its rightful context.

Communication plays a big part in everything and anything in this world. It is the method of exchanging information form one person to the other. Nevertheless, anyone can do just about that, but great leaders communicate effectively. This is the main difference. You see, the majority of the problems not only in an organization but generally in life, are coherently the results of communication failure. Miscommunication leads to confusion and can eventually be the potential cause of letdown.

To be able to lead efficiently, one must establish a good chain of communication. However, before being victorious in this feat, you must first identify prospective barriers that can somehow substantially affect the flow of communication. Some of the leading factors include stress, biases, noise, environment, and even cultural backgrounds. Identifying the potential hurdles will help you in your determination of solution to deal with the barriers successfully. This will also ensure a favorable and lasting relationship with your team that will also be the grounds of achievement of goals.

Getting to know the process of communication is vital in any management. It is the chain of understanding amongst you and your people which holds the people and the company together. Another very imperative aspect of good communication is active listening. However, most people mistakenly use both hearing and listening interchangeably.

To lay the facts low, hearing and listening are two entirely different words. Hearing is involuntary. It is merely the reception of sound stimuli. Listening, on the other hand, is a selective activity. It not only involves the reception of sound waves but also its interpretation. It also includes decoding sound stimuli to a language which we readily understand.

And lastly, but equally important, is feedback. Giving feedback is done through the relay of messages from the sender to the recipient. Merely restating the sender’s message is not enough, conveying the sender’s ideas and feelings are more important than just repeating the exact words. It has to be a balance between verbal delivery and nonverbal cues such as eye contacts, facial expression, body language, and posture. Nonverbal cues helps deliver a full impression of the message as well as raising the channel of interpersonal communication.

Being an effective leader not only equates for having the most commanding attitude and having attained the highest educational background as a possible, it also accounts for your ability to run a good conversation. This could not be achieved without properly developing your communication skills – your ultimate tool to obtaining success.

If you think that genetics has something to do about one’s leadership skills, you are incorrect. Although a number of Bush’s have already served the great nation, it doesn’t literally mean that it runs through their blood.

If you are driven with great desire and passion, then nothing can stop you from becoming an effective leader. You have to remember that people are not born with an ability to lead. Leadership is an infinite process of self-realization and learning through education and experience.

To motivate your subordinates to progress into advanced levels of teamwork, there are a couple of things that you must do, know, and be. These things do not actually come naturally. It is a complex method of acquisition through continuous exposure and work. You see, good leaders don’t rest after achieving commendations and praises; they even continually work hard to better themselves. Leadership may be defined as the capability to inspire, influence, and encourage people to donate a fair share of work which in turn leads towards the success of the group.

One of the greatest mistaken beliefs in leadership is that it only applies for those people who are on top. The truth of the matter is that it is for everybody. Anyone can lead, regardless of their economic or intellectual status. In fact, anyone could even learn to lead if they have devoted themselves to. Essentially, learning ways to be a good leader is one of the easiest undertakings one can engage in. It is not entirely learning everything from square one. It is just merely a phase of awakening those innate skills within you.

A good leader does not bid for superiority or respect; just like all people, they build it. Good character is a substantial prerequisite to achieve success in leadership and mind you, this is not something that can be learned. Another important reminder is that a team will only make it harder to attain success merely by reckoning where they want to go and letting their leaders do the rest of the work. The desire to accomplish a task may begin from the strong character of the leader, strong in the sense that it can employ other people to work under their command.

Great leaders should also manifest integrity and equality in all of their endeavors. They are role models in the eyes of their subordinates and it would be unlawful to mislead them. His actions and deliberations must be strongly based on facts, moral, and ethical values. He should not be afflicted with the desire to cast verdicts using emotions rather than mental. It is not enough to look forward for your own goal but principally explain the advantages of achieving success for everyone in the team.

Leadership is an integral part of your system. However, unlike other inherent systems, it has a switch. It only means that the ability to lead is within you, you just have to find out the rightful ways to hone them.

“Leaders are not born, they are made”. You may have probably heard of this catchy line a couple of times in your entire existence, mostly from speeches. And yes, it is so predictable. But have you ever thought about the real deal behind one man’s success in leadership?

Before getting into the core and putting down incomprehensible facts and systematize ways to be a good leader, you have to fully understand the basics. Being a leader is sometimes mistakenly thought as merely being the first or the most capable. However, beyond having the loudest voice for your constituents to follow your orders is a more profound depiction that entails all varied aspects of leadership.

Part of your being a leader is giving out orders. This is the easy part. Getting your subordinates to follow your every order and efficiently deliver their fair share of work is the hardest part. It is not only enough to mandate someone to do his work. Leadership is about influencing people and motivating them to do their part of the work with minimal or no supervision as possible.

Every man is different. Every man works differently and every man pulls motivation from different things. Before one can manifest great leadership, he has to have greater passion and from passion comes a lifetime commitment. Leadership and commitment is like bread and butter or perhaps spoon and fork, wherein one cannot efficiently function without the other.

Commitment is the single most important aspect of success, more so in leadership. After all, you wouldn’t be where you are right now without your undying commitment for the company. If you show commitment and have been a living proof that commitment is what got your where you are, you will not only influence your people to live out your principles, but you are also unconsciously giving them career paths for their future’s sake.

Along with demonstrating commitment to your company is commitment to yourself as a leader. In fact, it is the second-most crucial aspect of success. An effective leader has astounding self-confidence, integrity, and a feasible sense of personal candor. If you have grown in a perfect setting with the perfect parents who taught you perfect values, then possessing the above-mentioned standards is just as easy as 1, 2, 3. However, this is not always the case. There are no perfect parents because there is also no perfect child. In simpler words, if you are not naturally given these values, your commitment to leadership will serve as your drive to learn them.

And lastly but equally important is your commitment to your people. The basis of the team’s commitment to their work is chiefly influenced by the leader’s commitment to each of them. Building a lasting relationship between you and your immediate staff is surrounded by principles like courtesy, giving constructive feedback, and respect.

Leadership is not just about having the necessary skills to direct and guide a group into the right way. The biggest fraction of good leadership is commitment. If you have demonstrated everything the right way, your subordinate’s work will be a verification of your success as a leader.

People admire leaders, especially good and effective leaders. Without these kinds of leaders, a company, organization, institution or even a country won’t be successful.

However, tragic as it may seem, there are lots of leaders in position right now who are not actually capable of being a leader. They are what we may refer to as pseudo-leaders. You know, the ones who seem to look like leaders, who seem to act like leaders, but behind closed doors, when they are all alone, they do not have an idea how to manage the issues which entails the wit and sense of a true and effective leader!

This now leads us to ask a vital question - what then, makes a good leader? Well, there isn’t really an exact definition, requirements or standards as to what a good leader is. However, one thing is for sure - having a clear vision is one great quality of a good leader. By having a concrete prospect on what needs to be accomplished, a leader can be able to make wise decisions as well as make back-up plans should there be an instance that his plans would backfire.

Being prepared for failure is also a trait that a good leader must possess. You see, realistically, even though how good a leader is, there might be chances that his decisions would backfire. That is why, an effective leader must have a back-up plan so that he and his subordinates can quickly recover and compensate for any failures or errors.

A leader should also be able to exude an aura of assurance, confidence and credibility. If he has none of these qualities, his subordinates would not follow him. You see, the subordinates look at the leader as someone who has the biggest responsibility in attaining the goals of the group. Without the leader’s initiative, the group would more or less end up with little or no accomplishment at all.

It is a leader’s prerogative as to how he would lay down his instructions and how he would distribute the work load to his subordinates. What’s important is that all the steps and measures that a leader is going to take is for the fulfillment of the group’s goals.

A leader must also take note of the individual differences of his subordinates. By keeping in mind that his subordinates possess different strengths and weaknesses, he can be able to have an idea as to what kind of tasks he will give to each individual.

As long as a leader has a clear vision on what he and his subordinates need to accomplish, it will be easy for him to organize and plan activities which would make them successful in whatever endeavor they have to take.
